O'Grady lived in Wheaton, Illinois, and attended Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. The family was raised by her parents within Wheaton (Illinois) and she graduated in 1981 from the North High School in Wheaton. The model was featured on several television commercials, before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles. The career of O'Grady began as model and actress for commercials with Montgomery Ward. She had her big screen debut in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring character on ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Apart from guest-starring in other shows and appearing in independent films as well as produced for television She also starred as an actor in a variety of TV shows. Her debut role on television was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC Police drama NYPD Blue. Her role as the tall, blonde squad secretary was performed from 1993 to 1996. In each of those years, she received one of the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Drama Series. Together with her cast she received an award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, for Best Performance of an Ensemble in Drama Series.
